Under the direction of the Government of India, Partition Horrors Memorial Day-2026 will be celebrated on August 14, 2026 with the aim of creating awareness among the general public about the sad memories of the partition of India and the realities related to it and to pay tribute to the struggle and sacrifice of millions of people affected by the partition. On this occasion, various programs will be organized at the state and district level. The objective of Partition Horrors Memorial Day is to make the new generation aware of the tragedy of the Partition of India, the struggle and sacrifice of the people affected by it and to respectfully cherish the memories of the victims of Partition.
Organizing special exhibition
Director General, Information Shri Banshidhar Tiwari said that a state level program will be organized in Dehradun district in the presence of Chief Minister Shri Pushkar Singh Dhami. Families affected by the partition disaster will also be invited to the programme. During the program, two minutes silence will be observed in the memory of all those who died during the partition. In the programme, there will be an official screening of a short documentary made on the history, cultural heritage and contribution of the Matua community. Also, a special exhibition related to the horrors of Partition will be organized.

He said that the digital exhibition prepared by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India to showcase the pain and struggle of the families affected by Partition will be downloaded and displayed from the Government of India portal in all the districts of the state. Along with this, programs like debates, speeches, quiz competitions, lectures and discussions will be organized in schools, colleges and universities. Students will also be encouraged to participate in the National Online Quiz organized on DLA portal.

In this regard, Secretary, Culture Shri Yugal Kishore Pant has also issued guidelines to all the department heads, commissioners and district magistrates regarding organizing Partition Vibhishika. He said that on this occasion, participation of families of freedom fighters, academicians, public representatives and other distinguished citizens will be ensured. Families and their relatives affected by Partition will be given an opportunity to share their experiences and memories and mementos will be distributed to them. Candle march and tribute programs will also be organized.
