The last trading day of the week saw considerable volatility in the Indian stock market. After a volatile day, both Sensex and Nifty closed marginally lower. Selling pressure was seen especially in auto, metal, energy and pharmaceutical stocks. Mid-cap and small-cap indices also remained weak.
At the close of trading on August 14, the Sensex closed down 70.71 points at 78,009.25. The Nifty closed down 29.85 points at 24,366. A total of 1,855 shares advanced, while 2,244 declined, and 174 remained unchanged.
On the Nifty, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, Jio Financial, ONGC, Hindalco and SBI were the major decliners. On the other hand, shares of Apollo Hospitals, Bharti Airtel, Adani Enterprises, Adani Ports and Wipro saw gains.
Among the sectoral indices, except Nifty Media, most of the indices closed lower. The media index rose 0.96%, while the rest of the major sectors saw selling pressure. Nifty Pharma was the most under pressure and fell 1.04%. Besides, Nifty PSU Banks closed down 0.72%, FMCG 0.56%, Auto 0.54% and IT 0.34%. Amid the weak trend in the market, investors also kept an eye on global cues and crude oil prices.
