The season is still a long way off, but even on Ferragosto, the NBA finds a way to keep us busy. Overnight, a new trade between the Hornets and Cavaliers went down, while today will primarily be about the 2026 Hall of Fame. And new details continue to emerge from the recently released schedule ahead of the new Regular Season.
Schroder heads to the Hornets, Tre Mann goes to the Cavaliers
Let’s start with the trade market. Charlotte has agreed to acquire Dennis Schroder and cash considerations from Cleveland in exchange for Tre Mann adding another veteran to the roster after an offseason in which the Hornets have made plenty of changes.
Dennis Schroder’s NBA career continues to be a nonstop journey. Between trades, signings and returns, the former Rockets guard from Germany has changed teams countless times since entering the league.

Cleveland, meanwhile, receives Three Man who is coming off a season averaging 5.5 points in 53 games. This certainly isn’t a trade destined to reshape the balance of power across the league, but it allows the two teams to address different needs: Charlotte adds experience in handling the ball, while Cleveland looks to bring a younger guard into its rotation.
Stoudemire and D’Antoni enter the Hall of Fame together
Today will primarily be about the 2026 Basketball Hall of Fame. Amar’e Stoudemire, Mike D’Antoni, Doc Rivers, Candace Parker, Elena Delle Donne, Chamique Holdsclaw, Mark Few, Joey Crawford and the 1996 U.S. women’s national team will officially be inducted in Springfield. The ceremony will begin at 7:00 p.m. ET, or 1:00 a.m. in Italy.
For anyone who experienced NBA basketball in the 2000s, seeing Stoudemire and D’Antoni enter at the same time carries particular significance. Their Phoenix Suns, alongside Steve Nash, were among the teams that anticipated much of the basketball we see today: an extremely fast pace, spacing, constant pick-and-rolls and a desire to attack before the defense could get set. Stoudemire closes the circle as a player, D’Antoni as a coach and innovator of the game.
The NBA is still trying to make the schedule less demanding
Meanwhile, interesting numbers continue to emerge from the 2026-27 NBA schedule. Teams will play an average of 14.2 back-to-backs the lowest figure since the introduction of the NBA Cup, and no franchise will have more than 16. The league has also completely eliminated some of the most demanding stretches: no team will play four games in five days, eight in 12 or 18 in 30.
The rest and load management issue will inevitably remain a topic of discussion, especially once teams begin managing rotations and superstar workloads, but at least on paper, the NBA continues to work toward reducing the most extreme scheduling clusters.
For us at Dunkest, there’s also a much more practical implication: fewer brutal stretches could mean a little less roulette with rest days and players being ruled out at the last minute.
Dybantsa-Peterson: date set for February
The schedule has also confirmed one of the most anticipated matchups of the new generation. AJ Dybantsa and Darryn Peterson the top two picks in the 2026 Draft, will meet again on February 27, when Washington visits Utah. One week later, on March 6, the second matchup will take place in Washington.
In the Summer League, Dybantsa finished their first matchup with 27 points and seven rebounds, while Peterson had 24. Before February, however, the Wizards rookie will already have several interesting tests against other members of his draft class, including Caleb Wilson and Cameron Boozer. The Rookie of the Year race already has its first dates to circle.
October 20 is still a long way off, but slowly all the pieces of the new season are falling into place. We have the rosters, we have the schedule and now we also have the most interesting matchups. All that’s missing is the fantasy basketball list (coming soon).
