CBI files first charge sheet in Twisha Sharma death case, gross negligence in police investigation revealed

New Delhi:CBI has filed a charge sheet in the court in the case of suspicious death of former Miss Pune and model-actress Twisha Sharma. The investigating agency has made Twisha's husband Samarth Singh and her mother-in-law Giribala Singh accused in the case. Both have been charged with serious charges related to abetment of suicide and dowry. In the CBI charge sheet, charges have been leveled against both the accused under sections 80(2), 85, 108 and 3(5) of the Indian Justice Code (BNS). These include provisions related to abetment of suicide and dowry harassment. Apart from this, a case has also been registered under Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act.

Twisha Sharma was married to Bhopal lawyer Samarth Singh in November 2025. Samarth's mother Giribala Singh had retired from the post of District Judge in Madhya Pradesh. On May 12, 2026, about six months after marriage, Twisha was found unconscious in a suspicious condition at her in-laws' house in Bhopal. The family took him to the hospital, but the doctors declared him dead. In the initial postmortem, the cause of death was said to be hanging. After this, Twisha's parents raised questions about the circumstances of her death and dowry harassment.

Family made allegations of torture

Twisha's brother Major Harshit Sharma and family had alleged that she was being mentally and physically harassed for dowry since her marriage. The family also claimed that the injuries present on the body were ignored in the initial postmortem and that the police, being an influential family, did not investigate properly. At the same time, Giribala Singh had denied the allegations. He had claimed that Twisha was suffering from mental illness like schizophrenia and drug addiction. Twisha's family had completely rejected these claims.

Police negligence revealed in CBI investigation

After increasing controversy over the delay in registering the FIR, police investigation and absconding of the accused husband, the Madhya Pradesh government had handed over the case to the CBI. The Supreme Court had also taken suo motu cognizance of the matter. After this, the panel of doctors of AIIMS conducted Twisha's postmortem again. The CBI investigation revealed many flaws in the police action. During the investigation, it was revealed that the belt with which the hanging was said to have been carried out was not sent for testing at the time of postmortem. The documents related to his seizure did not even have the signatures of the witnesses. A police officer was fined for this negligence.
