India Automative Steel Project: AM/NS India Starts India's First Manufacturing Project for Premium Coated Automotive Steel

  • AM/NS India has successfully started domestic production of 'Zagnelis Protect' advanced coated automotive steel in India.
  • India has become the first country in the world to produce this advanced technology locally outside Europe.
  • The product will help the Indian automobile sector significantly reduce its dependence on expensive foreign imports.

AM/NS India, a joint venture, has started production of 'Zagnelis Protect' premium coated automotive steel in India. India has become the first market outside Europe to localize the product. This will help to significantly reduce the country's dependence on imports of high-tech steel.

About 8 to 10 percent of the automotive steel required for the production of cars manufactured in India had to be imported until now due to technological complexity. More than 3 crore vehicles are produced in the country every year. Therefore, it is strategically very important to manufacture such high quality steel in India.

'Zagnelis Protect'Major advantages of,

  • Excellent corrosion resistance: This steel does not corrode even on cut edges and beveled areas.
  • 'Self-healing' Technology: This coating has the ability to automatically repair small scratches or minor damage.
  • Excellent Productivity: This steel can be easily bent and is very useful for welding.
  • Improvements in Logistics: Local availability of supplies will save transportation time and ensure quality.

In the initial phase, this steel will be used to make micro-electric motor housings (such as windscreen wipers, side mirrors, window regulators) in cars. Each train has around 20 to 30 such units. In future, this steel will be used for the main structure and body panels of cars.

AM/NS India Marketing Director Ranjan Dhar explained that this is part of their strategy to create import alternatives with the help of advanced steel technology. This is the third patent that ArcelorMittal has commercialized in India after 'Magnelis' for renewable energy and 'Optigal' for construction.

This production has been started as part of a major expansion program at the Gujarat plant. AM/NS India's current steel production capacity is 9 million tonnes per annum. In addition, the company is in the process of setting up a new integrated steel project with a capacity of 8.2 million tonnes in Andhra Pradesh.

India's roll-steel exports rose 36% to 6.6 million tonnes in the fiscal year 2025/2026 ended March 31, according to a GMK Center report. This increase in exports is due to heavy purchases ahead of upcoming trade policy changes in Europe.
