According to a news channel report, the UP Home Department on Monday handed over the final report of the SIT into the alleged theft of offerings at the Ram temple in Ayodhya to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust for further action. Quoting sources, the report said that during the SIT's interrogation, former trust general secretary Champat Rai had denied any involvement in the alleged irregularities in the management of donations in the temple. Rai reportedly told investigators that he himself had filed a complaint regarding the suspected theft, following which the accused were arrested.
During questioning, Rai also said that it was his responsibility to ensure transparency and prevent irregularities in collecting offerings at the temple and he took action after coming to know about the alleged irregularities. It is noteworthy that SP President Akhilesh Yadav was the first to raise the issue of alleged theft of offerings in Ram temple. He had also demanded the intervention of the Supreme Court in this matter. However, on the request of the temple trust, the Uttar Pradesh government had constituted a three-member SIT under the leadership of Lucknow divisional commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant on June 13. Range Inspector General of Police Kiran S and Special Secretary (Finance) Neel Ratan Kumar were the other members of the panel.
In this case, the SIT had submitted its preliminary report to the UP government on June 23. The report included several recommendations, following which further action was taken in the case. Based on the preliminary investigation, Krishnamohan, a member of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, lodged a written complaint at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi police station. An FIR was registered on June 25, naming eight people and other unidentified persons as accused. Which includes Avinash Shukla, Anukalp Mishra, Luvkush Mishra, Manish Kumar Yadav, Karunesh Pandey, Ramashankar Mishra, Subhash Srivastava and Ram Shankar Yadav alias Tinu. All the named accused have been arrested and booked under relevant provisions of BNS and Section 13(1)(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
