From car to allowances worth Rs 1,00,000, what are the MLAs in Tamil Nadu going to get apart from salary?

In Tamil Nadu politics, the government of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has announced many big facilities related to the movement of MLAs. The government is preparing to provide vehicles to all the MLAs for constituency visits and public relations. Along with this, there is also a plan to give allowances for expenses related to vehicle, fuel and driver. According to reports, the purpose of the vehicle facility is to help MLAs make regular visits to their constituencies and reach out to public grievances faster.

What is CM Vijay’s new announcement?

According to the government’s plan, government cars will be provided to all the MLAs, so that they do not have to depend on private vehicles or rented cars to travel to and from their constituencies. According to the decision of Vijay Sarkar, there is also a provision for fuel and driver allowance along with the car. However, the final purchase cost of the scheme, the vehicle model and the complete timeline for its implementation are not yet clear in the available reports.

Why was there a need to give cars to MLAs?

The MLAs argue that their work is not limited to the proceedings of the Assembly only. They have to visit villages, towns and local institutions in their constituencies and listen to the problems of the people. In the absence of government vehicles, many MLAs use private or rented vehicles. The government believes that with better transportation arrangements, MLAs will be able to reach their constituencies more regularly and effectively.

Who raised the issue in the assembly?

This issue came into discussion after the demand for vehicle facility was raised in the Assembly. According to the report, the MLA argued that without adequate logistics support, it is difficult for public representatives to work effectively in their constituencies. An argument was also placed before the government that many elected heads of local bodies get government vehicles, whereas such facility is not available to MLAs. After this, the government took steps towards providing vehicle facilities to all the MLAs.

Why is the decision important for first-time MLAs?

After the 2026 assembly elections, 146 MLAs have been elected for the first time in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly. A two-day orientation program was also organized for these new MLAs in June, in which information about the assembly process, rules and functioning of government departments was given.

The challenge of regional work is also big for the new MLAs because they will have to be continuously present in their areas, understanding the administrative system and local level problems. In such a situation, the facility of government vehicle can prove to be of practical help for them.

The basic logic of this initiative of the government is that the easier the MLAs will reach their constituencies, the faster they will be able to put forward the problems of the people before the administration. Now the focus will be on when the purchase of new cars starts, what category the vehicles will be in and what conditions are set in the final notification of the government regarding the ₹75,000 offer.

What facilities have the MLAs been receiving till now?
