The penalty was imposed because after orders were reserved on eight bankruptcy petitions against the airline, it had informed the tribunal about its settlement at the last moment. The tribunal directed SpiceJet and Aviator ML to deposit ₹7.5 lakh each in the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund.
The special bench of NCLT, comprising Judicial Member Mahendra Khandelwal and Technical Member Anu Jagmohan Singh, passed this oral order on Wednesday.
NCLT said that a special bench was formed for the insolvency cases of SpiceJet and judicial time was set aside to prepare a verdict on these cases. Lawyers for other lenders also opposed postponing the hearing. He said that the hearing of the remaining seven cases should not be stopped because of a settlement with one lender.
The bench also agreed that giving information about the settlement in this manner is not a proper use of the court's time.
SpiceJet is currently going through financial troubles. The airline incurred a net loss of Rs 1,138.15 crore between April and December of the financial year 2025-26.
