New Delhi, 19 August 2026: On the strength of Devdutt Padikkal's century and Manav Suthar's brilliant performance of 10 wickets, the Indian team defeated Sri Lanka by 165 runs in the first Test played in Galle and took a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. India had given a target of 372 runs to win; However, the host team was all out for 206 runs in the second innings.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, the Indian team scored 462 runs in the first innings, in which Padikkal had an important contribution of 167 runs. In response, the Sri Lankan team was all out for 284 runs, giving India a lead of 178 runs. India scored 193 runs in the second innings in which Rishabh Pant's 66 runs and Padikkal's 44 runs were the main ones and set a target of 372 runs to win against Sri Lanka.
Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vice-Captain K.L. Rahul gave a great start to India in the first innings. Yashasvi was run-out after scoring 32 runs, while K.L. Rahul (82) was deprived of scoring a century. Devdutt Padikkal, who came to bat at number three due to injury to Sai Sudarshan, scored 167 runs in 230 balls, in which he hit 15 fours and one six.
Captain Shubhman Gill scored 16 runs and Rishabh Pant scored 39 runs. Dhruv Jurel scored a half century (51). Ravindra Jadeja 13, Manav Suthar 24, Mohammed Siraj 11, Prashant Krishna 2 and Kuldeep Yadav remained unbeaten scoring 13 runs.
