Preparation to break into BJP's 'Lodhigarh', understand the reason for Akhilesh's announcement

Before the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections 2027, Samajwadi Party has intensified its strategy to break into the Lodhi vote bank, which is considered strong for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). SP President Akhilesh Yadav, while giving a big political message on August 16, on the birth anniversary of heroine Rani Avantibai Lodhi, announced that August 16 will be declared a government holiday if the Samajwadi Party forms the government in the state. This announcement is being seen as an attempt to give political respect to the Lodhi community and integrate it into the broader social equation of the PDA.

Lodhi community constitutes about 4 to 5 percent of the population of Uttar Pradesh. The number may not be as large as that of any one ethnic group, but its presence in many areas of Rohilkhand, Braj, Bundelkhand and Central UP has a direct impact on the election results. According to political analysis, Lodhi voters are in a position to influence the victory-loss equation in more than 65 assembly seats of the state.

SP has three Lodhi MLAs, one Lok Sabha MP

Amidst SP's efforts to integrate the Lodhi community with itself, the party currently has Lodhi faces like Rahul Rajput alias Rahul Lodhi, Chandra Prakash Lodhi and Rekha Verma in the Assembly. In the official member list of Uttar Pradesh Assembly, Rahul Lodhi, Chandra Prakash Lodhi from Fatehpur and Rekha Verma are SP MLAs from Bidhuna. SP also has a strong face of Lodhi community in the Lok Sabha. Ajendra Singh Lodhi is the current MP of SP from Hamirpur. In 2024, he defeated Kunwar Pushpendra Singh Chandel of BJP in a close contest. This figure is important in terms of SP's strategy, because the party is now trying to expand its organization and support base in Lodhi community to the assembly level.

In which districts the impact of Lodhi vote?

The influence of Lodhi community is mainly felt in Rohilkhand, Braj, Bundelkhand and many parts of Central UP. In areas like Etah, Kasganj, Badaun, Farrukhabad, Mainpuri, Firozabad, Etawah, Auraiya, Kannauj, Farrukhabad, Shahjahanpur, Pilibhit, Hardoi, Unnao, Bulandshahr, Aligarh, Agra, Fatehpur, Hamirpur, Mahoba, Jalaun, Jhansi and Lalitpur, Lodhi voters play an important role in the electoral mathematics.

Especially in Bundelkhand, the influence of Lodhi community is important for SP because the victory of Ajendra Singh Lodhi on Hamirpur Lok Sabha seat in 2024 has given the party a strong political base in this region. Despite the population of Lodhi community being around 4-5 percent, its influence on many seats is more than the proportion of its population. The reason for this is the strong concentration of Lodhi voters at the local level in different areas. This is why SP is considering this as the next important part of its PDA experiment.

Bet to break into BJP's traditional vote bank

Lodhi community has been a strong social base of BJP for a long time. During the era of former Chief Minister Kalyan Singh, this community had a strong political association with BJP. This is the reason why SP's current effort is being seen not just as an exercise to add a new vote bank, but as a strategy to weaken the traditional social base of BJP.

Akhilesh Yadav is now trying to connect the Lodhi community with the Yadavs, Other Backward Classes, Dalits and minority voters by including them in the PDA. If this experiment is successful on the ground, then a new electoral equation may arise in front of BJP on many seats.

Effect may also be seen in ticket distribution

The biggest impact of SP's strategy can be seen during ticket distribution in 2027. In the assembly constituencies where Lodhi voters are in a decisive position, the party can consider fielding strong Lodhi faces. The objective is not just to garner Lodhi votes, but to create a comprehensive victory equation by connecting the local Lodhi leadership with Yadav, Dalit and minority voters. The party already has MLAs like Rahul Lodhi, Chandra Prakash Lodhi and Rekha Verma and Lok Sabha MP in the form of Ajendra Singh Lodhi. In such a situation, these leaders can be used to expand the organization among the Lodhi community and prepare new political faces.

How successful will Akhilesh's move be?

By declaring a holiday on the birth anniversary of Avantibai Lodhi and installing her grand statue, Akhilesh Yadav has given a clear indication that SP now wants to connect the Lodhi community not just as an election figure but with the question of political participation. Now the real challenge is to convey this message to the booth level. In 2027, if SP is successful in linking this vote with its PDA alliance by giving tickets to strong Lodhi candidates, then BJP's traditional equation can be challenged in many seats from Bundelkhand to Rohilkhand and Central UP.
