When you say Gujarat, Bengalis think of the flat, vast Rann of Kutch. But Saputara in Dang district of Gujarat is a unique beautiful hill town. It is still relatively less crowded than other tourist destinations. A blanket of mist, occasional rain surrounds this small hill town at an altitude of about 1,000 meters in the lap of the Sahyadri range of the Western Ghats.

Coming here is not just about rushing around and seeing a bunch of sights. Rather, it is more enjoyable to observe nature with time in hand. Time seems to stand still in front of Saputara Lake. Boating is also available in this water body surrounded by hills. The distant mountains can be seen from the sunrise point and sunset point here.
During the monsoons, the form of the Gira waterfall can be seen at dawn. Hatgarh Fort can be visited to get a touch of history. For nature lovers Purna Wildlife Sanctuary and Bansada National Park deserve special mention.
An important aspect of Saputara is the indigenous culture of the Dang region here. Various communities including Bhil, Kokna, Gamit, Warli live in this region. Their dance, clothing, arts and crafts are part of the unique identity of this hilly region.

Saputara is most beautiful in monsoons. The Western Ghat hills then turn thick green, the mist descends on the roads, the waterfalls seem to come back to life. In 2026, the Gujarat Tourism Department has organized the 'Saputara Monsoon Festival', which will run from August 8 to 29. The festival offers opportunities to witness local folk culture, tribal dances, Warli paintings, and taste local food. Saputara is also comfortable to visit in winter.

How to go?
If you want to go to Saputara from Kolkata, you can take the train to Nashik Road, from there you can go to Saputara by road. Distance from Nashik Road to Saputara is approximately 80-100 km. Saputara can also be reached by road from Kolkata via Surat or Mumbai.
