Digital surgical strike on fake calls and SIM fraud: Biometric verification now mandatory to get a new SIM card

Vaibhav Srivastava, New Delhi
The government has taken a very strict and important decision to curb the increasing day by day cyber crime, fake calls and digital fraud through SIM cards across the country. Henceforth, customers will have to go through biometric verification to get any new mobile connection. The main objective of this decisive step taken by the Department of Telecom is to root out the numerous SIM cards running on fake IDs and the cyber frauds caused by them.
According to the newly revised guidelines of the government, not only while getting a new SIM card, but also if the customer wants to change his existing SIM card or change the name, address or any other important details in his mobile connection, he will have to undergo biometric verification again. This strict re-verification process will completely stop illegal SIM transfer activities in the name of another person.
During this verification process if it is noticed that false or forged documents have been produced by any person, or an attempt has been made to obtain a SIM by giving a false identity, the concerned telecom company will immediately inform the local police. Further, all mobile connections of customers or agents found violating these new rules will be terminated with immediate effect.
These innovative rules implemented in the telecom sector will provide digital security to common citizens. Mandatory biometric verification will provide complete control over fake identity SIM cards and provide greater protection against cyber malpractices and identity theft.
