UP Elections 2027: From Royals To Political Rivalries – Amethi’s Fascinating Electoral History

Amethi has long remained important and closely associated with the Nehru-Gandhi family; however, the Assembly seat has a much more intriguing electoral history. From the influence of the Amethi royal family to dramatic contests involving major political parties, the constituency has witnessed several twists and turns over decades. As Uttar Pradesh prepares for the upcoming Assembly elections, its past battles are once again attracting attention.

A Seat Shaped by Royalty and Politics

Amethi Assembly constituency has historically seen strong political influence from the Amethi royal family. Members of the royal household have repeatedly entered electoral politics, making the seat one of the more distinctive constituencies in Uttar Pradesh. Sanjay Singh, a prominent figure from the royal family, became a major political force and represented the constituency in the past. Over the years, the seat has changed hands among the Congress, BJP, and Samajwadi Party (SP), reflecting wider political shifts across Uttar Pradesh.

When Wife Fought Wife

In the UP Assembly election, the seat witnessed perhaps the most unusual contest in Amethi’s recent history. Sanjay Singh’s two wives, Garima Singh and Ameeta Singh, entered the electoral battle from the same constituency. Garima Singh contested on a BJP ticket, while Ameeta Singh represented the Congress. The contest turned into a closely watched political and personal battle. Garima Singh emerged victorious with 64,226 votes, defeating SP’s Gayatri Prasad, while Ameeta Singh finished fourth.

BJP’s Sanjay Singh Lost to SP’s Prajapati

Five years later, Sanjay Singh himself returned to the Assembly contest, this time as the BJP candidate. However, his comeback bid ended in defeat. SP’s Maharaji Prajapati won with 88,217 votes, while Sanjay Singh secured 70,121 votes—a margin of 18,096 votes. Despite facing legal cases, Prajapati secured the seat.

What Awaits in the Upcoming UP Election?

With Amethi’s royal legacy, shifting party loyalties, and a history of high-profile contests, the upcoming election could once again make the constituency a major political hotspot. The key question remains whether voters will continue the recent trend of shifting political preferences or give a fresh mandate to a familiar force.
