Former Australian opening batter and head coach Justin Langer was asked if he was approached to be the head coach of England’s Test team. The Aussie icon made a remark that sparked laughter among the anchor and fellow commentator Ricky Ponting. Langer, who had previously coached Australia, talked about how he would have been ‘divorced’ from his wife and friends like Ponting and Matthew Hayden.

Justin Langer broke the silence on being offered the England Test head coach position. The former Australian batter talked about how it would have been a difficult task to accept the offer given the two nations are bitter rivals. Langer, while sitting next to Ricky Ponting, said, “I would have been divorced from my wife, my daughters, but also from Ricky (Ponting) and Haydos (Matthew Hayden) and all my other mates.”
He further talked about how it is a big job and praised the newly appointed coach Stephen Fleming for having a calm head. “It is a big job; it is a big project for Stephen Fleming. It was just perfect timing; Stephen had come out of Chennai (CSK), and they (ECB) saw the opportunity to grab hold of Stephen. He will be calm; he has got the right cricket mind,” Langer added.
Taking a cheeky dig at the possibility of becoming the head coach, the former Australian opening batter talked about how it would have been difficult to sing the English national anthem. He said, “From my point of view, a lot of it was talked about, though of singing the national anthem during the Ashes… No.”
Stephen Fleming Appointed as England Head Coach
Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) coach Stephen Fleming was appointed as England men’s new Test head coach by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), with Joe Root returning as the team’s Test captain.
Fleming, widely regarded as one of cricket’s most accomplished coaches, takes charge after an 18-year stint with CSK, where he guided the franchise to five Indian Premier League (IPL) titles and 10 finals.
