India won only 1 medal in BWF World Championship, where did Sindhu miss the target?

Indian players had made a strong start in the Badminton World Championship 2026 held at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi. But by the end of the championship, India had only 1 medal in its account. Trisa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand secured bronze by reaching the semi-finals of women's doubles. They lost to China's Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning in the semi-final match, due to which India had to settle for bronze.

In the very first round of the tournament, India got a victory which filled the entire campaign with excitement. 21 year old Ayush Shetty created a big upset by defeating world number-1 Xi Yu Qi of China. Ayush, who was debuting in the World Championship, won 21-14, 13-21, 21-19. However, he did not advance beyond the round of 16.

India's biggest hope in men's singles, Lakshya Sen, lost to unseeded Garrett Tan of Singapore in the second round itself. In women's singles, PV Sindhu reached the pre-quarterfinals. Former world champion Sindhu faced the challenge of China's Wang Xi Yi. Sindhu made a comeback in the second game and took the match to the decider but ultimately her campaign ended after losing 11-21, 21-15, 17-21. With this, India's challenge in women's and men's singles ended.
