Washington. America has officially removed Syria from its ‘State Sponsor of Terrorism’ list. This decision of the State Department became effective after the notification issued by the US Finance Department. This step has been taken after the earlier announcement and the subsequent completion of the review process in Congress.
The decision will end many of the special category legal sanctions imposed on Syria, including restrictions on US aid, defense exports and certain financial transactions. This decision of the US administration is being considered an important change in Washington’s policy towards Syria.
The US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has also amended the rules and confirmed the removal of Syria from regulatory provisions related to state sponsors of terrorism. However, this does not necessarily mean that other sanctions imposed on Syria or all individuals and organizations related to it will automatically end.
