health desk : To lose weight, people are often advised to eat less, reduce portion size and count calories. But, a new research that has emerged recently has given a new alternative to this traditional thinking. According to a study published in 'JAMA Network Open', weight can be lost without any restrictions through a low-fat vegan diet. In this diet, people were given complete freedom to eat as per their choice, yet they consumed an average of 357 calories less per day.
According to researchers, the main basis of this entire process is 'Energy Density' i.e. the amount of calories present in per gram of food. Vegan diets eliminate calorie-dense foods like meat, dairy and eggs and include fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes. Because plant-based foods are rich in water and fiber, people ate about the same amount of food as they did before, but the amount of calories going into their bodies automatically dropped by about 30%.
Dr. Hana Kahleova, the lead researcher of the study, says that this approach does not depend on one's willpower or small portions, but rather it is about choosing foods that naturally provide fewer calories in each bite. When food has low energy density, the body's natural hunger signals work in your favor. You eat to your heart's content and consume fewer calories overall. This may prove to be a highly sustainable and practical method of weight management for those who want to avoid the disappointments associated with traditional calorie-reduction methods.
