Mumbai, Aug 25 (PTI) Kriti Sanon’s ad for a jewellery brand showing her tying a rakhi dressed in an Indo-Western ensemble has sparked controversy with fellow actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut describing her look as “intentionally creepy” and others calling it vulgar.
There were also those who spoke up in support of the “Cocktail 2” star’s outfit — an ivory bralet-skirt combo worn with a cape. “It’s is a wonderful time to be a woman, our closets are full of variety of clothes, today’s woman is a global woman, from cocktail dresses to lehenga cholis, jeans to saris, bikinis to salwar kameez…
“…from all the options that are available to us today why would you tie your brother a Rakhi in your bikini/ undergarments? Where are all your styling options? Ha ha the advert looks intentionally creepy,” Ranaut, known for her provocative statements, wrote in her Instagram story.
Sanon has not commented.
The ad shows Sanon tying a Rakhi on her brother’s wrist as their pet dog looks on. She then ties another Rakhi on the pet’s leg.
The video soon led to an uproar many criticising her choice of clothing during a traditional festival and promoting nudity and some even objecting to her tying a Rakhi on a dog.
“Kriti Sanon tying rakhi in bra kinda attire. Nudity was not this common before,” wrote a user on social media.
“Creative freedom is great but it should not change the essence of the tradition,” wrote another.
There were also many who defended the actor, including Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut.
When asked to comment on Ranaut’s remarks on Sanon, he retorted, “Why do you take that woman MP so seriously? Don’t.” “Don’t give them so much important. They are ‘andh bhakt’. She is one step above, she does not have a brain. There are so many issues but… Why don’t you ask her about tea getting expensive… Where did our sugarcane go, it went into making ethanol,” he told reporters.
A social media user wrote, “Indian men are having nightmare over Kriti Sanon wearing modern clothes in rakshabandhan ad only if they could create such outrage for women who are wearing normal clothes and still getting raped by indian men daily and getting 0 justice.” PTI
