New Delhi. New and rapidly spreading infectious diseases in the country will now be able to be identified faster than before even in remote areas. The government has decided to create a network for testing viral diseases in every part of the country with an investment of Rs 732.304 crore in the next five years. The Central Government is emphasizing on setting up new laboratories in those areas where there is currently no adequate facility for advanced testing of infectious diseases.
Till now medical colleges and research institutes have played a big role in this network. Now the government is working on the possibility of taking the system to the district level. However, the number has not been decided. According to the latest data of the Health Research Department, 167 virus research and diagnostic laboratories are working in the country.
keep an eye on border areas
The government is especially concerned about remote and underserved areas. There is still a need to expand testing facilities in areas like North-Eastern states, Ladakh and Lakshadweep. It has been recommended to make special provisions in the existing rules in case the availability of institutions in these areas is less. According to the Health Research Department, proposals are being received for laboratories in these areas. Proposals for Leh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Nagaland are currently under consideration.
