IND vs SL: Sri Lanka Series Ends, 5 Big Changes Could Be Seen in Team India; Star Player’s Place in Danger
IND vs SL: India finished the two-Test series against Sri Lanka with a 1-0 victory after the second Test in Colombo ended in a draw. India had looked on course for a 2-0 sweep after enforcing the follow-on, but Sri Lanka fought back through Sonal Dinusha’s unbeaten 133.
The result could lead to some important selection discussions before India’s next Test assignment in New Zealand. With competition increasing in several departments, as many as five changes could be considered.
1. Kuldeep Yadav Could Face a Tough Selection Battle
The biggest question could be around Kuldeep Yadav.
Kuldeep missed the Colombo Test because of an infection, while his replacement Saransh Jain made his debut. Before that, Kuldeep had taken only 1/103 in the Galle Test, while Manav Suthar produced a superb 10-wicket match haul.
With Jadeja virtually indispensable because of his batting, Suthar’s emergence and other spin options available, Kuldeep may have to fight harder for a regular place when he returns.
2. Devdutt Padikkal Has Strengthened His Case
Devdutt Padikkal emerged as one of India’s biggest positives in the series.
He finished with 328 runs and was named Player of the Series after making a major contribution with the bat.
His performances could make it difficult for the management to immediately change the top order, particularly with Sai Sudharsan having missed the series through injury.
3. Saransh Jain Could Remain in the Picture
Saransh Jain’s Test debut was forced by Kuldeep’s absence, but his performances have given the selectors another option.
He was initially selected because of his all-round ability and strong domestic record—188 first-class wickets and 2,223 runs before the Sri Lanka series.
If India want greater batting depth alongside their spin attack, Saransh could remain part of the selection conversation.
4. The Pace Combination Could Change
India’s fast-bowling combination may also be reconsidered.
Jasprit Bumrah was unavailable for the Sri Lanka Tests because of his knee issue, while Mohammed Siraj played despite being short of his usual pace. Captain Shubman Gill has clarified that Siraj is not injured and is simply working his way back to rhythm after a lengthy break.
If Bumrah returns to full fitness, the pace attack could look considerably different in New Zealand.
5. More Competition for the All-Rounder Spots
The return of players who missed the Sri Lanka series could create another selection headache.
Washington Sundar was unavailable because of injury, while other injured players were also absent. India’s squad already contained several spin and all-round options, meaning the management will have to decide whether it wants more batting depth or a specialist wicket-taking bowler.

India may have won the series 1-0, but the Sri Lanka tour has created several new selection questions rather than providing all the answers.
Kuldeep Yadav appears to be under the most pressure, with Manav Suthar’s emergence and Saransh Jain’s debut strengthening India’s spin options. At the same time, Devdutt Padikkal’s 328-run series and the potential return of injured players could force the team management to rethink its combination.
India’s next Tests in New Zealand will provide the first major test of these selection decisions.
