Dubai. Women's T20 Asia Cup 2026 is going to start from today in Dubai, UAE. This time eight teams are participating in the tournament. Apart from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, Indonesia, Hong Kong, China, Thailand and host UAE will also give their full strength in the field for the title. The final of the tournament will be played on 13 September. India is considered a strong contender for the competition, while the current champion Sri Lankan team has also reached the tournament in excellent form. Pakistan and Bangladesh have the potential to cause upsets.
The tournament will run from 28th August to 13th September
A total of 15 matches will be played in the Women's T20 Asia Cup. These include 12 league matches, two semi-finals and one final. The group stage matches will be held from August 28 to September 8 and during this period one match will be played every day. After this, the first semi-final will be held on 10 September and the second semi-final will be held on 11 September. The title match will be played on 13 September. All the matches of the tournament will be held in Dubai.
India-Pakistan in same group
Eight teams have been divided into two groups.
Group A: India, Pakistan, Hong Kong, China and Thailand
Group B: Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, UAE and Indonesia
In the group stage, each team will play one match each against the remaining three teams of its group. The top two teams of both the groups will reach the semi-finals. This is the second time that eight teams are participating in the T20 format of the Women's Asia Cup. There were seven teams in the tournament in 2022, while in 2024 the number increased to eight after the addition of one more team.
This is how four associate teams made it
Indonesia, Hong Kong, China, Thailand and UAE have made it to the Asia Cup through the 2026 Women's Premier Cup. In the 18-team Premier Cup, these four teams topped their respective groups and then qualified for the Asia Cup by winning the quarter-finals. This will be the first appearance for Indonesia in the Women's Asia Cup. The Hong Kong team is returning to this tournament for the first time since 2012.
India's dominance, Sri Lanka the current champion
India has dominated the Women's T20 Asia Cup so far. India has won the title three times in the five editions played in the T20 format. However, on two occasions he had to face defeat in the finals. In 2018, Bangladesh won the title by defeating India, while in 2024, Sri Lanka won the trophy for the first time by defeating India. Now India's eyes will be on regaining the title.
India-Pakistan mega match on 5th September
The most awaited matches of the tournament include the clash between India and Pakistan. Both the teams will face each other on September 5. India has dominated Pakistan in T20 international cricket. Of the 17 matches played between the two, India has won 14. However, even one bad day in T20 cricket can change the equation.
Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur also made it clear before the tournament that her team is not paying special attention to any one opponent. He said that the team's aim is to play good cricket rather than thinking about any particular team. According to Harmanpreet, the level of Asian teams has improved a lot in the last two-three years and because of this the competition is going to be challenging.
The clash between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh is also important
There will be a match between defending champions Sri Lanka and Bangladesh on September 6. Eyes will be on this match also. Sri Lanka has a strong record against Bangladesh in T20 international matches. In 16 matches between the two teams, Sri Lanka has won 13 matches. Sri Lanka is in great form this year. He has achieved 10 wins in 13 T20 International matches. The team won the series against West Indies 2-1, defeated Bangladesh 3-0 and also won the series against Pakistan 2-1.
India favourites, but recent form a matter of concern
India are considered to be the biggest contenders for the tournament, although their recent T20 form has not been very impressive. India has lost nine matches in 16 T20 international matches played this year. Despite this, the team's depth and experience in big tournaments keeps it ahead of other teams. The Indian team will especially be eyeing a better performance by learning from the recent disappointing T20 World Cup campaign. Harmanpreet said that the experience gained in previous competitions will prove useful for the team and the players will try to play their best cricket here.
Lack of consistency in Bangladesh's performance
Bangladesh has had a mixed performance in T20 cricket this year. The team won all seven of its matches in the T20 World Cup Qualifier, but lost eight of the 12 matches played thereafter.
