Whether you’re already dealing with painful corns on your feet or just want to prevent them, podiatrists agree that wearing the right shoe is essential. We spoke with experts to learn about managing this annoying foot condition and their top shoe recommendations for corns.
Anne Sharkey, D.P.M., FACFASfounder of Solely Podiatry, explains that “The pain that occurs as a result of corns is due to the concentrated area of thickened skin pressing into underlying tissues.” To help avoid corns from developing or worsening, podiatric surgeon Elena Wellens, DPM, FACFASrecommends “shoes that keep the foot and toes in good alignment and prevent toe contracture” and supportive walking sandals.
Every podiatrist we chatted with said corns are caused by friction and that footwear is the key culprit. They’re particularly common in the summer: Jason C. Snibbe, M.D.an orthopedic surgeon, says sweat and moisture can cause feet to shift and rub against the inside of shoes, especially when worn without socks, or when there is insufficient heel stability. Instead, look for shoes with a roomy toe box, a secure heel and midfoot and stable but not overly soft cushioning, says Mikel D.
