EFL Cup 2026-27 — Savio nets on debut as Tottenham cruises past Charlton

Brazilian winger Savio scored on his debut as Tottenham Hotspur cruised past Charlton Athletic in the second round of the EFL Cup on Wednesday.

Spurs’ season started with an abject 3-0 hammering at Brentford on Saturday, and it bounced back with an improved performance albeit against a weaker opposition.

It was dominant throughout, and found the lead in the 41st minute through the boot of 19-year-old winger Mikey Moore. Moore’s drive from the edge of the box deflected off a Charlton defender and into the net for his first Spurs goal since January 2025.

Dominic Solanke — returning from an extended spell on the sidelines — added a second before the break with a swivelled shot in the box.

Defender Kevin Danso added the third, heading home debutant Mateus Fernandes’ free-kick at some person cost. The Austrian was subsequently forced to be substitued off to receive treatment.

Savio came on with the score 3-0 in the 71st minute, and opened his account 11 minutes later by cutting in on his left foot and drilling a low shot into the bottom right corner. Ben Davies added a fifth to complete the rout.

Charlton was able to secure a consolation goal when Lloyd Jones headed home from close range in the 87th minute.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side has been handed a tie against Liverpool in the third round.
