On the first of every month, everyone in the country, from common families to hotels, restaurants and small businessmen, keep an eye on the possible change in the prices of LPG cylinders. In particular, the prices of 14.2 kg domestic gas cylinder and 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder have a direct impact on the common man's kitchen budget and business costs.
Now, before the upcoming revision to be held on September 1, the price figures recorded in the past years during the months of August to September have come into discussion.
According to the public data of Indian Oil, between 2014 and 2025, from August 1 to September 1, the price of 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder in Delhi saw a decline of 6 times and an increase of 5 times, while the price remained completely stable for one year. That means the trend of the last 12 years has not been stable in any one direction.
The biggest relief was received in 2023, there was a huge blow in 2017
The biggest cut in commercial LPG prices between August and September was recorded in the year 2023. The rate of 19 kg Indane commercial cylinder in Delhi was Rs 1,680 on August 1, 2023, which came down to Rs 1,522.50 on September 1. That means businessmen got direct relief of Rs 157.50 per cylinder.
In the same period, there was a cut of Rs 166.50 in Kolkata, Rs 158.50 in Mumbai and Rs 157.50 in Chennai. In sharp contrast, the biggest increase was seen in the year 2017, when the price of commercial cylinder in Delhi increased from Rs 966 to Rs 1,081, that is, there was a direct increase of Rs 115.
Cylinder became cheaper for many years, then prices increased in a few years
If we look at the old data, in the year 2022, the price of 19 kg cylinder in Delhi had come down from Rs 1,976.50 to Rs 1,885 (decrease of Rs 91.50). Earlier, a cut of Rs 32.50 was recorded in 2014 and Rs 41 in 2015.
In 2016, rates remained stable in Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai, while in Mumbai there was a decrease of Rs 28.50. In the years of increase, the price in Delhi increased by Rs 47 in 2018, by Rs 50.50 in 2019 and by Rs 70 in 2021. In 2024 also the price increased from Rs 1,652.50 to Rs 1,691.50. In contrast, in 2025, there was a reduction of Rs 51.50 in Delhi and the price came down from Rs 1,631.50 to Rs 1,580.
Huge fluctuations were also seen in domestic LPG cylinders
The history of the prices of 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder from August to September has also not been the same. In the year 2014, the price in Delhi decreased from Rs 920 to Rs 901. In 2015 it fell from Rs 585 to Rs 559.50 and in 2016 it fell from Rs 487 to Rs 466.50.
However, the situation suddenly changed in 2017 and domestic cylinder prices increased from Rs 524 to Rs 597.50 (an increase of Rs 73.50). In 2018 also the price increased from Rs 789.50 to Rs 820 and in 2019 it increased from Rs 574.50 to Rs 590.
Historic reduction was received on domestic LPG in 2023
In the year 2020, the rate of domestic LPG cylinder in Delhi remained stable at Rs 594 in both the months of August and September. Changes in rates were seen in subsequent years also.
Especially in the year 2023, the general public got a big relief on domestic LPG, when on August 30, 2023, there was a huge one-time reduction of Rs 200 in the price of 14.2 kg cylinder. After this decision, its price in Delhi had come down to around Rs 803.
Why is the decision of September 1 considered very important?
The change in LPG cylinder rates on the 1st of every month depends on many factors like crude oil and gas prices in the international market, exchange rate of rupee against US dollar and transportation and local costs.
While changing commercial cylinder rates affects the daily costs of hotels, dhabas, restaurants and small traders, domestic LPG rates can directly change or improve the monthly budget of every family. In such a situation, the history of the last 12 years shows that there has been no fixed pattern of change in LPG prices between August and September.
