Nepal's Himalayan glacier and mountain researcher Dhananjay Regmi told the media that the flow of water and debris in the flash flood that occurred last Wednesday was about 300 kilometers per hour. This flow proved to be much more rapid, aggressive and destructive than initial estimates.
While analyzing this horrific incident, famous mountaineer Sanjit Singh Bal informed that a 1 to 2 square kilometer long glacier situated at an altitude of about 5,000 meters suddenly broke and fell down. Due to the steep slope of about 3,000 meters and passing through very narrow gorges, the speed of this debris and water increased manifold, which wiped out many villages in its path.
Why is the second great danger looming over Nepal?
Satellite images taken from space have confirmed that about 2 square kilometers of the northern glacier of the 7,000 meter high Langtang Lirung has collapsed. Due to accumulation of this heavy debris fallen from the mountains, 3 new lakes have been formed in the area.
Experts say that if any rock or debris falls down from the mountains now, then these three lakes can burst one by one, due to which there is a huge risk of 'cascading impact'. The only way to avert this future threat is controlled water release, which has not been started yet. In view of the seriousness of the situation, the administration has appealed to the people living in low-lying areas to immediately go to higher grounds and remain completely alert.

The situation in Battar and its surrounding affected areas remains extremely pathetic. Hundreds of people are still missing here. The people affected by the disaster are completely unmindful of any scientific warnings or other possible flood threats and are busy searching for their family members.
