More than 3000 people are still missing. There are sharp differences between China and Nepal over sharing information related to floods. In May, a meeting was held in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, to discuss the risks of natural disasters. Three months later, on 26 August, a glacier burst on the Nepal-Tibet border, causing massive flooding. New pictures and videos are coming out every day. After this tragedy, questions have been raised on sharing of disaster related information between the two countries.
Nepal complains that it did not get complete information, while China says that it gave all the information on time.
Nepal's complaint
Nepal says that it had sought necessary information from China about glacier movement, river levels and heavy rains to make timely preparations. However, he did not get much information as expected. Nepal's Hydrology Department says that China only sends forecast of heavy rain, whereas Nepal needs accurate information about glaciers, landslides and water levels every 10 minutes to save lives. Meanwhile, Nepal has now alleged that this information was not given earlier. Nepal now wants to make an agreement with China similar to the agreement with India, under which information about rivers and weather will be provided continuously and regularly.
China rejected the claim
China has rejected Nepal's claim. China has rejected Nepal's allegations and said that it had given necessary information on time. According to the Chinese Embassy, this border area of the Himalayas is very far, due to which monitoring there is a big challenge. China says that its meteorological center had sent an email to Nepal 12 days before the accident, warning it about disasters like heavy rains and landslides. It was also said that a warning had been given regarding the glacier.
