Instagram changes AI profile rules, labeling is now mandatory

Instagram changes rules : Instagram has changed its rules regarding profiles featuring AI-generated personas. The platform is going to rename the existing “AI Creator” label to “AI-Generated Profiles”. Profiles that contain an AI-generated persona but do not reveal their identity may be barred from recommendations. This means, Instagram may restrict access to AI content if the AI label is not included. However, creators who use the correct AI label on their profile will not have their reach reduced.

New label for AI profiles

Instagram announced in a blog post that it is replacing the existing “AI Creator” label with the “AI-Generated Profiles” label. The platform started testing this label earlier this year. Creators who previously used the old label can review the new label to confirm it, or remove it if it no longer applies. The new label will be for profiles that feature an AI-generated persona.

Failure to label, impact recommendations

If the profile contains an AI-generated persona and does not provide the required information, the profile will no longer be eligible for Instagram recommendations. Affected creators will be notified and can check their account status to see if access to their profile has been restricted. If a profile loses its recommendation eligibility, creators can become eligible for recommendations again by adding an AI-generated profile label.

Access is reduced if not properly labeled

Instagram has clarified that creators will not be penalized for reach if they properly disclose their AI-generated profiles. If a creator believes that their profile has been unfairly banned, they can appeal through their account status. After accepting the appeal, the profile and its content will again be eligible for recommendations. However, simply using AI tools to create content will not require a profile-level AI label.

Changes to rules following user complaints

According to Instagram, the change was made after feedback from users who saw profiles that appeared to be of real people, but later found out that the person depicted was created by AI. The platform says the new labeling system will help users better understand who or what is behind the profiles they see on Instagram.
