India will host the inaugural ICC Women’s Champions Trophy in 2027, with Vadodara and Mumbai finalised as two cities for a six-team tournament from February 14 to 28. The Vadodara International Cricket Stadium and the Cricket Club of India in Mumbai will host the matches of India, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka, Â Australia, and England, the ICC announced on September 2.
Pakistan will not compete in the tournament as the six participating teams made it to the Champions Trophy based on their rankings in the ICC Women’s T20I format as of the July 6 cut-off date. The round-robin format will see each team playing five matches, with the top two at the end of the league stage qualifying for the final on February 28.
Sri Lanka were supposed to host the tournament, but they were stripped of the rights due to the government’s interference in the cricketing affairs of the country.
Sri Lanka Cricket is trying to come up with a revised constitution, while also looking to conduct the elections at the earliest. Sri Lanka Cricket has been stopped from attending the ICC Board meetings for the time being.
Bangladesh, India and South Africa were in the fray to replace Sri Lanka, and the decision-makers recommended India’s name. The ICC Board awarded the hosting rights to India on September 2.
India had hosted the 2025 Women’s Cricket World Cup, and the opportunity to stage another marquee event would add another significant chapter to Indian cricket. ICC Chairman Jay Shah said the inaugural edition would see the best teams taking on each other, with each nation having a chance to improve their rankings.
“With a marquee ICC women’s event now taking place every year, we have a significant opportunity to build greater momentum, provide more consistency and create a stronger rhythm for the women’s game, its players and its fans around the world,” he said.
This will be the fourth ICC event hosted by India in the last four years. The Men’s ODI and T20 World Cups were held in 2023 and 2026, respectively.
