Lucknow, Read: The Lucknow bench of the High Court rejected the petition challenging the Indian citizenship of Rahul Gandhi, Congress leader and Lok Sabha member from Rae Bareli. The petition also demanded issuance of quo warranto against Rahul Gandhi's Lok Sabha membership. The court said in its order that the alleged letter from Cambridge University, in which the study of a person named Raoul Vinci is being claimed, does not prove the allegations.
The court further said that apart from this, no concrete document could be presented in support of the allegation of Rahul Gandhi being a British citizen. On this, petitioner number 2 also requested for permission to withdraw the petition, which was accepted by the court.
This order was given by Justice Shekhar B. The division bench of Justice Saraf and Justice Abdhesh Kumar Choudhary passed the verdict on the petition filed by Ashok Pandey and Rajneesh Kumar Singh. It was claimed in the petition that Rahul Gandhi is not an Indian citizen but a British citizen. During the hearing, the court found that petitions had already been filed by the petitioners on the same issue in 2015 and 2019. Rejecting the petition of 2015, the High Court had said that for redressal of citizenship related complaint, one can approach the Central Government under Section 9(2) of the Citizenship Act, 1955.
In the year 2019 also, in the petition filed on the same subject, freedom was given to make a representation before the Central Government. At the same time, it was alleged in the present petition that Rahul Gandhi had declared himself a British citizen in the year 2003 by declaring himself a director and major shareholder in a UK registered company Backops Limited. However, when asked on grounds during the hearing, no records of the company or the UK Registrar of Companies or any document declaring British citizenship could be produced.
