A very big and important news is coming out from India regarding the Asian Games 2026, one of the biggest and prestigious Mahakumbh in the sports world. The Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has officially given its green signal to a huge and strong Indian contingent of 768 members for the much-awaited Asian Games to be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan from 19 September to 4 October 2026. In this megasports event, India's best athletes and various sports teams will take the field to represent the country in a total of 36 different sporting events. If we look at the figures of this total 768-member team approved by the Sports Ministry, it includes a total of 503 outstanding athletes from the country, out of which 269 male and 234 female players will showcase their sporting talent. Apart from this, for the smooth functioning of the team and supervision of the players, 246 team officials and support staff members and 19 Indian Olympic Association (IOA) team members have also been made part of this official list. The decision taken by the government to send players and officials to this global platform entirely at government expense is a huge and commendable step towards promoting sports culture in the country. After reviewing the preliminary lists sent by various sports federations, the Sports Ministry has approved this final squad keeping in mind the excellent performance of the players and their chances of winning medals. Under this process, 11 new and talented players have been added to the already decided list of 492 players, which has further increased the strength of the team. There is tremendous enthusiasm among Indian sports lovers regarding these matches being held on Japanese soil. If we analyze the data of various sports of the Indian team participating in the Asian Games, then as always, the biggest team is from track and field i.e. athletics. The athletics department is sending a huge contingent of 110 members to Japan, comprising 36 male athletes and 43 female athletes who will be bidding for medals in their respective events. Apart from this, these 110 members also include 31 dedicated support staff members who will keep a close eye on the fitness and training of the players. Right after athletics come the country's popular team games such as hockey and cricket, in which the total number of members is fixed at 50 or more. A team of 57 members has been approved for the traditional national game hockey, while in view of the growing craze of T20 and ODI formats, a total of 47 members have been included in the cricket team. Apart from this, a strong squad of 47 members has been given the green signal, maintaining India's dominance in the shooting competition. Understanding the importance of support group and coaching staff, the Sports Ministry has made extensive administrative arrangements this time. The support group includes head coaches of various sports, deputy head coaches, specialist physiotherapists, sports medical staff, mental health psychologists, male and female masseurs, performance analysts, team managers and other technical experts. The Ministry has specifically issued strict instructions to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to ensure adequate and accessible availability of women support staff, such as women doctors, physiotherapists and massage experts along with the contingent of women athletes at all times so that the women athletes do not face any inconvenience. Along with this, the team has also been instructed to share their entire travel and movement plans with the Indian Embassy in Tokyo and the main organizers of the event in time. Big news related to the cricket team: Gautam Gambhir's name is missing, VVS Laxman will take over the responsibility of head coach. With the announcement of this huge 768-member Indian team, a shocking revelation has come to light in the cricket circles which has attracted the attention of sports lovers and experts. Indian men's cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir will not be a part of the official Asian Games contingent. Gautam Gambhir's name has not been included in the final and authorized list released by the Sports Ministry, which is being considered a big surprise for many people. In his place, VVS Laxman, currently the head of the National Cricket Academy and Center of Excellence in Bengaluru, has been given the responsibility of head coach of the cricket team for the Asian Games. VVS Laxman has successfully toured with the Indian Youth and Asian Games teams several times before in the absence of the head coach and his experience will prove to be very important for the team. Talking about the equations of the cricket team, a total of 20 support staff members have been approved for the cricket team of approximately 30 athletes, who will meet the tactical and physical needs of the team. Along with VVS Laxman, this coaching and support staff will also include Amol Majumdar, other assistant coaches, 5 specialist medical staff and a dedicated team manager. Although the exact reasons behind Gautam Gambhir not going on this tour have not been officially confirmed, but cricket scheduling and the upcoming international series are being considered as the main reasons.
