New Delhi. India has supported the United Nations proposal to make a new map of the world, but has also made it clear that this proposal does not support any particular map. The Ministry of External Affairs has said that India's sovereign territory should be shown as per its official map. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal has said that the UN resolution neither adopts nor certifies any specific map of the world. Nor is there any discussion in it including international boundaries, disputed areas or names of places.
The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson said that India voted in the resolution, using the interpretation to reiterate its position on Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. He has said in the statement that the sovereign territory of India, including the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, should be shown as per the official map. Any wrong or misleading depiction of the map of India is not acceptable. Randhir Jaiswal said that our stand on India's sovereignty and territorial integrity is clear, consistent and unchangeable.
The United Nations has accepted the proposal on 4 September 2026. Under this proposal, the aim is to rebalance the world map and especially to promote equitable representation of Africa. This resolution was passed in the United Nations with the support of 164 countries. Only America voted in opposition. The proposal states that the use of maps with equal area has been encouraged. Which accurately show the actual and comparative sizes of the continents. Before voting on the resolution, India had made it clear that this step should not be seen as an endorsement of any particular map, projection or borders of the country. Actually, Pakistan has illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir and China has illegally occupied a large part of Eastern Ladakh. Talks are going on with China on the border dispute. Whereas, India has many times asked Pakistan to return PoK.
