Six people have died and 11 have been rescued after a multi-storey building collapsed in Delhi's Satya Niketan, while several others are still feared trapped in the debris, officials said.
Rescue and search operations continued throughout the night, with teams working to locate and safely evacuate those believed to be trapped. Officials said most of those feared trapped were students.
During the overnight operation, one more person was pulled from the debris but was found dead, taking the death toll to six.
Earlier on Sunday, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta ordered a magisterial inquiry into the collapse of the boys' paying guest accommodation. After inspecting the site, she directed officials to investigate the circumstances leading to the incident and ordered registration of an FIR against the building owner.
“Those found responsible for this grave incident will be held fully accountable and dealt with under the strictest provisions of law,” Gupta said after reviewing the situation at the site.
Police said an FIR has been registered at South Campus police station against alleged owner Hariram and others. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Amit Goel confirmed the registration of the case.
The building, estimated to be 40-50 years old, had a basement and five upper floors and was being used as a PG accommodation for students, many of whom were studying at Delhi University's South Campus. Police said the premises could accommodate around 40 people.
The collapse occurred around 1.30 pm while repair work was reportedly underway in the basement. Officials also indicated that heavy rainfall may have contributed to the incident.
The rescue effort involves the Delhi Police, National Disaster Response Force, Delhi Fire Service and Delhi Disaster Management Authority.
