There was chaos on the spot after the building collapse in Delhi's Satya Niketan. Local people were the first to arrive and rescue the people trapped under the debris. Later, the work of removing the debris started with the help of rescue team, crane and JCB.
After the accident, many families are worried about the news of their loved ones. Some nearby buildings were also evacuated after cracks appeared. At the same time, friends and family members of missing student Arpit Jaaz are still making rounds of the hospital and the incident site in the hope of finding him safe.
Did the local people start the rescue?
Surjit, who reached the spot at the time of the accident, said that the incident happened between 1:15 to 1:30 in the afternoon. He is associated with Aryabhatta College and lives in the area, so he reached the spot as soon as he got the news. According to him, initially it was not clear how many people were trapped under the debris. Local people started evacuating those people whom it was possible to reach. Later, within about an hour, rescue teams and heavy machines reached the spot and took command of the rescue. Surjit told that the people who were pulled out from the debris in the initial phase were alive. However, later information about the death of some people came out from the hospital.
Were cracks visible in the surrounding buildings too?
After the accident, the biggest concern arose regarding the surrounding buildings. Nearby hostels and other buildings were evacuated. The students living there were sent to safe places. Vishal, a student, said that after cracks were seen in some nearby buildings, they were evacuated as a precaution. Colleges also opened their campuses to provide accommodation and food to the students. Many students went to their relatives or friends' places.
Is the search for loved ones going on amidst the debris?
After the accident, the worries of many families about their loved ones increased. Arpit Jaaz's friend Mayank, a second year B.Com student at ARSD College, also reached AIIMS in search of him. According to Mayank, he got information about the accident through social media. Called Arpit, but could not be contacted. After this they talked to his family, from where they came to know that Arpit was in the same building at the time of the accident. He lived on the third floor. Amidst the rescue operation, family and friends are constantly holding out hope that he will be found safely. This incident of Satya Niketan is not just an incident of collapse of a building, but has also left many questions regarding safe construction and timely relief arrangements in the city.
