Kathmandu. The recent devastating floods in the neighboring country Nepal have caused huge devastation. The fierce form of the rivers and the strong flow of rising water washed away big concrete houses, bridges and roads like straw. But amidst these horrifying pictures and videos of the devastation, a picture has also emerged which has shocked everyone. In this horrific scene of deluge, where everything around was turned into debris and washed away, a small house stood firmly right in the middle of the raging river. This house looks no less than a miracle amidst the devastation.
Seeing these pictures going viral, it was natural for people to ask the question that how did this small house withstand the dreadful onslaught of water which had wiped out the entire area. When civil engineers and architects searched for the reason for the survival of this house, there was no magic behind it, but 'an amazing feat of engineering'. This house has proved that if scientific techniques are properly used in construction, then natural disasters can be avoided to a great extent.
According to experts, the main reason for the safe standing of this house is its 'RCC frame' and 'pillar based structure'. The foundation of the house was taken deep and technically till the ground level. Additionally, the structure of the house functioned in a way that allowed water to pass around its pillars, rather than directly blocking hydrodynamic pressure like a large wall would. Due to the absence of heavy obstruction to the flow of water, the structure of the house did not break and it remained firmly in place even in the midst of floods.
