Gonda. There is a doctor in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, whose mother tongue is Kannada, but she talks to her patients in Awadhi. This has become his identity. Gynecologist Dr. Anita Mishra is originally from Mangalore district of Karnataka. Anita, who comes from a Tulu and Kannada speaking family, made Gonda her home after marriage and today she has her own nursing home here, where a large number of female patients come for treatment. His specialty is not just medical experience but connecting with patients in their language.
How did you learn Awadhi?
Dr. Anita told in the Podcast With Brajesh Mishra, founder of Buzz, that when she was posted in Gonda, she did not know Hindi. After coming here, he had to learn Hindi, but the real problem came when the patients started speaking in Awadhi. She said, “The patients who used to come to Gonda spoke less Hindi and more Awadhi, so I had to learn Awadhi. Today I speak Awadhi very well and it is my favourite.”

How did you reach Gonda?
Dr. Anita met her senior Dr. Punyodaya Mishra at Manipal University during her medical studies. Both of them fell in love and got married. Anita had hoped to settle abroad after marriage, but the daughter-in-law of her only son had to settle in Gonda due to the wishes of her in-laws.
Both of them started medical practice here. Dr. Anita did not know Hindi, but she first learned Hindi, then Awadhi and the Awadhi speaking patients fell in love with her. Today Dr. Anita has no regrets about settling in Gonda.
