In the first half of 2026, sales of electric cars in India will double that of hybrids! Dominance of 'these' companies

  • In H1 2026, sales of electric cars more than double that of hybrid cars.
  • MG Windsor has overtaken models from Mahindra and Tata to lead electric car sales.
  • Seltos, Duster and Creta hybrids could give a big boost to the hybrid car market in the coming years.

The sales of electric cars in the first half of 2026 is clear that the fame of electric cars is growing rapidly in India. As many as 1,48,023 pure electric cars were sold in the country between January and June 2026. During the same period, 57,855 units of hybrid cars reached customers. That is, sales of electric cars remained more than 2 times as compared to hybrids.

Huge increase in sales of electric cars

82,535 electric cars were sold in H1 2025. Compared to that, sales in H1 2026 have increased by around 79%. Increasing number of electric models in the market, expansion of charging network and availability of options in different price segments are considered to be the important reasons behind this.

JSW MG Motor India, Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors are major contributors to this growth. The MG Windsor was the best-selling electric car with 19,080 units. The Mahindra XEV 9S took second place with 18,074 units. Tata Nexon.EV and Panch.EV also recorded sales of 16,567 and 15,683 units respectively.

Hybrids dominated by Toyota and Maruti

On the other hand, the hybrid car market, though relatively small, continues to be dominated by Toyota Kirloskar Motor and Maruti Suzuki India. The Toyota Innova Highcross led the way with 27,812 units, while the Urban Cruiser Highrider sold 18,577 units. Maruti Grand Vitara, Victoris and Invicto also made it to the list.

A new option in the hybrid segment

Although the choice of hybrid cars is currently limited, the situation is likely to change in the future. After the Kia Sorento Hybrid, the company is gearing up to launch the more affordable Seltos Hybrid next year. Renault may bring the Duster Hybrid to India around Diwali. Hyundai Creta Hybrid is also expected to enter in 2027.
