National Working President of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Leader of Opposition in Bihar Assembly, Tejashwi Yadav has targeted the Central Government over the flood situation in Bihar, accusing it of discrimination in its attitude towards Gujarat and Bihar. He said that when the situation worsens due to rain in Gujarat, the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister become active, but in Bihar, lakhs of people are affected by the floods and a large number of people have died, yet no concrete assistance has been received from the Central Government.
Tejashwi Yadav said in a statement issued on Monday that if rain water increases in any drain of Gujarat, the Prime Minister reaches there and declares it a disaster and gives a package of thousands of crores of rupees.
He claimed that on July 23 this year, one person had died due to rain in Gujarat, after which Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to the Gujarat Chief Minister through video conferencing and the Air Force and NDRF were asked to remain on alert mode.
The RJD leader said that a few years ago, when there were floods in Gujarat, the Prime Minister had conducted an aerial survey and an immediate package of Rs 500 crore was given. Teams of Army, Air Force and NDRF were deployed in relief and rescue operations and assistance of Rs 2 lakh each was given to the affected people.
On the contrary, referring to the situation in Bihar, Tejashwi said that due to floods in the state, more than 50 people have died, thousands of cattle are missing and there has been a loss of thousands of crores of rupees.
According to him, about 45 lakh people are affected by the floods, but leave aside help, not even a single word has come out of the mouth of the Prime Minister and the Home Minister for Bihar. He questioned whether the Central Government considers the Chief Minister of Bihar lightly.
Tejashwi alleged that Bihar is being continuously discriminated against. He said that the Central Government becomes active when it rains in Gujarat, whereas in Bihar, despite hundreds of people dying and lakhs of people being affected, the expected activity from the Center is not visible.
Tejashwi also raised the issue of deaths due to falling of Thanka. He said that every year a large number of people die due to Thanka falls in Bihar, but it has not been included in the list of national disasters and compensation for it is not given by the Central Government.
He claimed that in case of death due to rain in Gujarat, an assistance of Rs 2 lakh is given by the Centre. The RJD leader said that earlier, despite political differences, when disaster struck Bihar, Lalu Prasad Yadav and Nitish Kumar used to unite and raise their voice before the Center for the rights of Bihar.
He alleged that despite there being 30 MPs and eight Union Ministers from Bihar today, no one is raising voice for the rights of Bihar. Tejashwi said that despite being in the opposition, he has been putting pressure on the Central Government since day one for flood relief and has also written a letter to the Prime Minister.
He said that if the package is received from the Centre, it will be given only to the Bihar government, hence he has no personal benefit in it. He said that if his outlook was negative then why would he press for assistance from the Centre.
He also targeted BJP and said that it is a matter of shame for Biharis that despite 45 lakh people being affected, help, cooperation and hope are not visible from the Centre. He said that Bihar has always bowed down to the Central Government for its rights, but now Bihar itself is bowing down to the will of BJP. He appealed to the people to stay away from politics and ask the question why Bihar is being treated like this.
