Guwahati, 15 September 2026: Assam government has taken an important decision to equip its public transport system with modern technology. With an aim to improve passenger safety, transportation efficiency and travel experience, 'Intelligent Transport Management System' (ITMS) will be implemented in all the buses of 'Assam State Transport Corporation' (ASTC). Announcing this on Tuesday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said that by adopting this new system, the state government buses will not only become smart but will also be extremely safe for the passengers.
Under the new ITMS system, ASTC buses will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology. With this, real-time location monitoring of buses, operation process and proper management of bus fleet will be possible. This system has been designed for 'smart scheduling', which will reduce the waiting time of passengers at bus stops and improve the time-table of buses. Due to real-time tracking, officials will be able to take quick action on delays in bus routes and other incidents of road accidents.
As part of this initiative to enhance the safety of passengers, 'Emergency Panic/SOS Button' will be installed inside the buses. According to the Chief Minister, this emergency system will be directly connected to the central control room, so that immediate security and assistance can be provided in case of any emergency. Additionally, the upgraded system will also support automated ticketing and e-payments (UPI/digital transactions), thereby reducing dependence on cash and traditional paper tickets.
