The US House of Representatives on Tuesday put forward a bill that, if enacted, could give President Donald Trump the power to impose up to 100% tariffs on countries that buy oil and gas from Russia. India can also come under the scope of this possible action. However, this does not mean that 100% tariff will be imposed on India immediately. There is a proposal in the bill to include India in the list of countries on which such tariffs can be imposed in future.
This development has happened at a time when India has been buying large quantities of crude oil from Russia. After the Ukraine war, Russia offered oil at a discount, due to which India became a major buyer of Russian crude. The Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 won approval in the US Senate last month by a vote of 86-11.
