Tezzbuzz Desk- Internet use is increasing rapidly in India. People are spending more time than ever watching videos, scrolling reels and using social media on smartphones. Its effect is clearly visible on mobile data consumption also. According to circle wise data, Bihar is at the forefront in the country in terms of daily internet data usage. The special thing is that Bihar is lagging behind in terms of tele-density i.e. phone connections compared to population, but people using internet are spending a lot of data.

According to telecom sector data, about 49.1 petabytes of data is being used daily in Bihar. This is equal to approximately 5.14 crore GB. In terms of data consumption, Maharashtra is at second place with 48.7 petabytes. At the same time, the eastern region of Uttar Pradesh is at third place with 42.31 petabytes of data.

In this list, Gujarat is at fourth and fifth position with data consumption of 42.2 petabytes and Madhya Pradesh with 41.3 petabytes respectively. Statistics show that the use of online video and social media is continuously increasing in areas with internet access.

Mobile data is being spent the most on YouTube

The trend of watching videos has increased rapidly among Indian internet users. YouTube's share in total data consumption is 24.3 percent. That means, about a quarter of the data spent on mobile internet is being used for watching YouTube videos.

Instagram is at second place with 21.7 percent data consumption. Facebook's stake is 17.5 percent. Apart from this, 5.2 percent data is being spent on Google search and other online activities, while 3.5 percent data is being spent on WhatsApp.

There are many reasons behind the increasing consumption of mobile data. Among these, video streaming and social media are the most prominent.

  • Watching videos on YouTube and OTT platforms consumes a large amount of data.
  • Internet data is continuously used while watching reels on Instagram and Facebook.
  • Downloading large files and auto-updating apps also drains data quickly.

Indian is using 37 GB data every month

According to Ericsson's June 2026 mobility report, a smartphone user in India is spending an average of 37 GB mobile data every month. It is estimated that in the next five years this consumption may increase to 70 GB per month.

In the report, cheap 5G smartphones, better network coverage and fixed wireless access services have been cited as the main reasons for increasing data usage. According to estimates, by 2031 the number of 5G subscriptions in India may exceed 110 crores. This will be about 81 percent of the total mobile subscription.

By the end of 2025, the number of 5G subscriptions in the country was around 43 crore, while the number of 4G subscribers was around 57 crore. The number of 4G connections is expected to decline in the coming years with the increasing use of 5G.

Broadband and mobile number portability statistics

According to TRAI data for July 2026, the total number of broadband subscribers in the country reached 1094.48 million. The number of 5G fixed wireless access subscribers also increased from 12.94 million in June to 13.21 million in July.

During this period, about 15.98 million people applied for Mobile Number Portability i.e. MNP. This shows that mobile users are changing their service providers for better network and data services.

Overall, the Internet in India is no longer just a medium for communication or obtaining information. The increasing popularity of video streaming, reels and social media has given a new impetus to data consumption. Internet usage is likely to increase further in the coming years with the expansion of 5G networks.
