Regenerative Agriculture: More than 2,500 farmers of Punjab-Haryana got payment of Rs 2.9 crore
Awarded for saving environment and not burning stubble
Ludhiana/New Delhi. A historic change has been seen in India's agricultural sector. For the first time in the country, under the 'Agriculture Carbon' (Regenerative Agriculture) market, farmers regenerative farming And digital payments have been made to improve soil health. An amount of more than Rs 2.9 crore has been directly transferred to the bank accounts of more than 2,550 small farmers in Punjab and Haryana.
In a program organized at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) and Director General, ICAR, Dr. M.L. JAT released this first installment. This payment is part of 'Grow Indigo's Carbon Programme', which was launched in 2019 with the technical help of ICAR.
Payment of Rs 3 to 15 thousand for saving environment
Farmers have received this additional income for taking eco-friendly steps like direct seed sowing (DSC), less tillage and proper management of stubble (crop residue) (Regenerative Agriculture). Grow Indigo carbon credit Payment has been made on their behalf even before the sale, in which farmers have received Rs 3,000 to Rs 15,000 depending on their share.
45 billion liters of water saved, incidents of stubble burning reduced
According to scientific data, between 2019 and 2022, this initiative saved 45 billion liters of water and prevented burning of 2 lakh tonnes of stubble. This reduced 1,000 tonnes of deadly PM2.5 emissions. Its ground impact is that compared to 2021, there has been a huge reduction of 93' in the incidents of field fires (stubble burning) in Punjab. Moga's Ransingh Kalan village has made a record of not burning stubble on 1,310 acres of land for six consecutive years.
Success echoed in BRICS conference also
This success of Indian farmers (Regenerative Agriculture) has echoes at the international level as well. India's 'climate-smart' agricultural model has been praised in the 16th BRICS Agriculture Ministers' Meeting held in Indore in June 2026 and in the 'BRICS New Delhi Declaration'. This initiative shows how farmers can be economically strengthened by saving the environment through scientific methods.
