New Delhi. Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi said that the issue of banning the use of Trinamool Congress' name and election symbol is not just the fight of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, but it is the fight of every political party and voter who wants free and fair elections.

He alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Election Commission are working together to break political parties and snatch their election symbols. The Congress leader said, first Shiv Sena, then Nationalist Congress Party and now Trinamool Congress. Every time the same pattern – BJP and Election Commission together break a party. Then his election symbol is snatched away.
He said, when an entire party can be stolen, then it is not surprising that votes of crores of Indians are stolen. Questioning the role of the Election Commission, he said, the constitutional responsibility of the Commission is to protect the mandate, but on the contrary, it is helping those forces who overturn the people's decision.
The Election Commission on Thursday directed both factions of the Trinamool Congress not to use the party's name and 'Joda Phool' election symbol during the upcoming West Bengal assembly by-elections. The Commission has also asked both the groups to submit the names and election symbols of their choice by Friday morning.
