NEW DELHI:
The southwest monsoon has begun showing signs of withdrawing from parts of northwest India, even as several states are expected to receive rain and thunderstorms over the coming days, according to the India Meteorological Department.
The IMD said conditions are becoming favourable for the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from parts of West Rajasthan around September 19. At the same time, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the Andaman Sea and adjoining areas, which could influence rainfall activity over eastern and southern parts of the country.
Several northern and central regions are expected to experience rain and thunderstorms. Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Delhi, Punjab and parts of Uttar Pradesh are among the areas likely to receive rainfall during the period.
The weather system is also expected to remain active over central and western India, with Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Gujarat likely to receive rain. The IMD has forecast isolated heavy rainfall over East Rajasthan on September 19, while Madhya Maharashtra could also receive heavy rain.
In eastern India, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal are likely to experience rain and thunderstorms. In the south, rainfall is expected over Kerala, Mahe and Lakshadweep, while Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Rayalaseema could also receive varying levels of rain and thunderstorms.
The contrasting weather pattern marks the seasonal transition, with the monsoon beginning its withdrawal from the northwest while rainfall activity continues over several other parts of the country.
