New Delhi, September 19 (IANS). According to Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav, at least 200 chip design companies have come forward under 'India Semiconductor Mission 2.0' (ISM 2.0), which are proving to be 'game changers' in terms of creating semiconductor intellectual property (IP) in the country.
Over 105 chip design startups got access to state-of-the-art electronic design automation (EDA) tools and 20 startups received venture capital funding.
The minister said that against the target of training 85,000 design engineers, about 70,000 chip-design engineers have been trained in four years.
Vaishnav emphasized that to remain competitive at the global level, both quality and competitive cost are necessary. He also informed that out of the 12 plants approved under ISM 1.0, commercial production has started in five.
The minister also emphasized India's identity as a trusted country and its strong record in intellectual property protection.
Vaishnav highlighted the tremendous response 'Semicon India 2026' has received from home and abroad, large-scale business-to-business interactions and large participation from major semiconductor economies.
The country-specific roundtable revealed that global companies are taking greater interest in increasing their engagement with India.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stressed that trusted global partnerships are essential for a strong semiconductor value chain. He mentioned trust, credibility, incentives and value creation as the main pillars of cooperation. Also, he talked about a balanced approach towards self-reliance by combining domestic strengths and global capabilities.
142 people participated in the India-Singapore Roundtable. It discussed the potential for collaboration by combining Singapore's manufacturing, advanced packaging and supply-chain expertise with India's engineering talent, large market and fast-growing semiconductor ecosystem.
According to an official statement, 139 people participated in the India-Europe Country Roundtable. It focused on investment, supply-chain localization, equipment and materials, manufacturing, advanced packaging, semiconductor design, R&D and talent.
115 people participated in the India-South Korea Country Roundtable. It focused on opportunities to enhance cooperation across the semiconductor value chain, including manufacturing, technology, materials, advanced packaging, investment and supply chain. Also, discussions were held on bringing together South Korea's established semiconductor capabilities and India's engineering talent, growing market and manufacturing ecosystem.
