After Nandigram, Rejinagar, police arrested independent candidate

There is a new twist in the politics going on before the by-elections in West Bengal. After Nandigram, now the police has arrested the independent candidate from Rejinagar. Independent candidate Saiful Islam was arrested on Saturday in a five-year-old case of a clash between two groups during the 2021 assembly elections.

According to a 'PTI' report, the arrest of Saiful Islam, associated with Humayun Kabir-led Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP), came a day after the police arrested Congress's Nandigram Assembly by-election candidate Milan Pradhan. Milan Pradhan was arrested in a nearly two-decade-old case registered during the agitation against land acquisition.

This by-election had become necessary due to Humayun Kabir deciding to retain the Nawada seat and resigning from the Rezinagar seat. AJUP has fielded Kabir's son Ghulam Nabi Azad for this by-election.

A police officer said, 'Officers of Brahmapur police station have arrested Saiful Islam in a case related to the last assembly elections. There was a clash between two groups at that time. He told that Islam's name was registered in this case.

Meanwhile, Brahmapur Police on Saturday also sent a notice to AJUP chief (Humayun Kabir) to appear before the investigating officers on Monday in a case. This case is allegedly related to a conspiracy to incite tension between two communities. In this regard, a senior official said that this case was registered on September 14.
