Mathura: During checking on Barsana bypass road, Govardhan police station and SOG team had an encounter with the miscreant. A vicious chain snatcher was injured by a bullet in his leg in retaliatory firing by the police. The police caught him and sent him to Govardhan Community Health Center for treatment. During the encounter, the bullet of the miscreant hit the bulletproof jacket of Sub-Inspector Sharad Kumar Tyagi. The inspector narrowly escaped because of the jacket.

According to the police, on Sunday, Govardhan police station and SOG team were checking suspicious vehicles and persons on the Barsana bypass road. Meanwhile, the young man riding the Apache bike started running away after seeing the police. When the team chased, the bike slipped at some distance. Seeing the police team coming closer, the youth started firing from the pistol. One bullet hit the bulletproof jacket of Sub-Inspector Sharad Kumar Tyagi. The police retaliated in self-defense, in which the miscreant was shot in the leg. The injured criminal was brought under control and sent to the hospital.
Criminal arrested along with pistol, cartridges and two chains
The arrested criminal was identified as Neeraj alias Narendra (41), resident of Ral, Thana Jait, Mathura, resident of Hall, Ballabhgarh, Faridabad (Haryana). Police have recovered a .315 bore pistol, one live cartridge, three spent cartridges, two yellow metal chains, Rs 1190 in cash, Redmi mobile phone and the Apache motorcycle used in the incident from his possession.
Chain snatching and bike theft incidents revealed during interrogation
During interrogation, the accused confessed to several incidents before the police. Both the chains found in his possession are said to be related to recent snatching incidents. According to the police, one chain was snatched from a devotee on September 18 near Kusum Sarovar on Govardhan Parikrama Marg, while the other on September 19 was snatched from a devotee near Ramkutir on Vrindavan Parikrama Marg. During interrogation it also emerged that the recovered Apache motorcycle was stolen from Agra about 15 days ago.
More than 47 cases against Neeraj, accused in many serious crimes
According to police records, more than 47 cases are registered against Neeraj alias Narendra in Kotwali, Vrindavan, Govardhan, Raya, Refinery, Govind Nagar and Chhata police stations of Mathura. His criminal history includes cases under serious sections like attempt to murder, robbery, dacoity, chain snatching, Gangster Act, Arms Act and NDPS Act. The police are now also investigating the criminal network of the accused and other previous incidents. After completing the legal action, the accused will be presented in the court.
