What exactly happened?
So the government has brought a new rule. If the UPI payment is more than 2000 rupees, the shopkeeper or the person who took the money will have to pay MDR (Merchant Discount Rate) of about 5 rupees. That means 5 rupees will be deducted for every transaction above 2000. 5 rupees may seem small, but hundreds of people fill petrol at the petrol pump during the day. If 5 rupees go from each person, the calculation of the day goes into thousands of rupees. If we calculate the month, it is very big. Pump operators in Mumbai have told the government to exclude us from this MDR. If we don't listen then from 15th October we will stop all UPI payments above Rs 2000. What do pump owners say?
Pump owners say it's very simple. They say we already get very low commission by selling petrol and diesel. We requested the government several times to increase the commission, but the government did nothing.

If the profit is already low and now money will be cut on UPI too, how can we survive? This money will go from our pocket. So this charge is not affordable for us. Federation of All India Petroleum Traders spokesperson Monty Sehgal told Hindustan Times that, “We will not accept UPI if we do not give discount on payments above Rs 2000.” Dealers in Karnataka have also written a letter to the central government demanding exemption from this charge.
Opposition from the government itself
Interestingly, this decision is opposed not only by the pump owners but also by the ruling party. Industry cell of Ajit Pawar's NCP has also opposed this decision.
State General Secretary of Udyog Cell Manish Konde has written a letter to Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar. In it, he wrote that, think of the traders in Maharashtra. How will Digital India be if UPI is charged? Should people pay online or not? Don't burden traders like this.

Follow up with the central government about this. In fact, the government is promoting digital payments on one hand and charging them on the other, people are not understanding this. So now we have to see if the government reverses this decision? But till then, keep cash in your pocket when you go to fill petrol. Otherwise there would be a dispute over the pump.
