Kolkata. By-elections are going to be held on Nandigram and Rejinagar assembly seats of West Bengal. Voting on both the seats will take place on 6 October 2026. The results will come on October 9. Nandigram seat was won by CM Subhendu Adhikari, but he vacated it. At the same time, Humayun Kabir of Aam Janata Unnayan Party had won the Rejinagar seat, but he left this seat and has now fielded his son Ghulam Nabi Azad alias Robin in the by-election. Despite this, Humayun Kabir has not yet gone to Rejinagar to campaign in favor of his son. Also said that he will not go to campaign for his son.
Humayun Kabir's announcement of not going to Rejinagar to campaign in favor of his son is surprising. Humayun Kabir has not told why he decided not to campaign in favor of his son in the Rejinagar by-election. Humayun Kabir had earlier also offered former CM Mamata Banerjee to contest the by-election from Rejinagar seat. When he did not get any signal from Mamata, Humayun Kabir decided to let his son contest the West Bengal Assembly by-election from Rezinagar seat. In the West Bengal Assembly elections, Humayun Kabir had won the Rejinagar seat by a margin of 58876 votes. He defeated BJP's Bapan Ghosh by getting 123536 votes.
CM Shubhendu Adhikari has claimed to win the by-elections on Nandigram and Rejinagar assembly seats of West Bengal. Shubhendu Adhikari has said that only the ruling BJP will win the by-election. However, Rejinagar assembly seat in Murshidabad district of West Bengal has 62 to 65 percent Muslim population. Till date, no Hindu candidate has reached the West Bengal Assembly by winning this seat. Rejinagar seat was earlier considered a Congress stronghold. Humayun Kabir won from here in the years 2011 and 2013 also. After which the Congress candidate had won twice.
