Amidst the promotion of electric vehicles in the country, Kolkata Police has included a large number of electric motorcycles in its fleet. Recently, 183 units of Ultraviolet X-47 Skyforce have been included in the police fleet. According to the company, this is one of the largest consignments of high-performance electric motorcycles inducted by a state police force in India.
These bikes have been designed not like normal electric motorcycles, but keeping in mind the needs of the police. Many additional equipment have been installed in these to be used during patrolling and emergencies.
Specially designed bike for police
The police version of X-47 Skyforce is provided with equipment like siren, hooter and red-blue LED blinker lights. Apart from this, public address system, walkie-talkie holder and mic holder have also been installed for policemen.
Side panniers are also provided in the bike to carry important documents, files and other equipment. Necessary changes have also been made to the bike's electronic system to support additional electrical components.
Range up to 211 kilometers
According to the company, the X-47 Skyforce can cover a distance of up to 211 kilometers once fully charged. Due to the longer range, policemen can patrol the city for longer periods and the need for frequent charging can be reduced.
Talking about performance, the claimed top speed of the bike is 145 kilometers per hour. It is reported to have a maximum power of 36 bhp. Strong acceleration can help it move quickly in emergency situations.
Design for city and bad roads
The X-47 Skyforce has been designed with a crossover design. Its purpose is to provide better stability and handling on different types of roads. In a crowded city like Kolkata, compact motorcycles can easily reach areas where larger police vehicles may have difficulty accessing.
Keeping in mind the police duty, the bike has been fitted with a strong structure and additional equipment, so that essential items can be carried along while patrolling.
Expected reduction in fuel and maintenance expenses
Increasing use of electric motorcycles is likely to reduce the petrol expenses of the police department. Especially in daily long distance patrolling, the use of electric vehicles can reduce fuel expenses.
Additionally, electric motorcycles have fewer moving parts than conventional petrol engines, which may reduce the need for regular maintenance and associated costs. This can help the police department reduce operational costs in the long run and will also reduce emissions at the local level compared to petrol vehicles.
