Indian mixed martial artist Suchika Tariyal has created history by securing India’s first-ever medal in MMA at the Asian Games.
Tariyal assured herself of at least a bronze medal in the women’s traditional 60kg category after advancing from the competition in Aichi-Nagoya. Her achievement marks a significant milestone for Indian combat sports at the continental Games.
Tariyal’s medal comes as MMA makes a significant appearance on the Asian Games programme, giving Indian fighters an opportunity to establish themselves in a sport that has been gaining popularity across the continent.
The Indian contingent had entered the event hoping to make an impact in the new discipline, and Tariyal’s performance has already ensured a place on the medal podium.
Her result has added another sport to India’s medal list at the Games, alongside shooting and the medals assured in women’s cricket.
